Smooth, balanced and full of character, this classic German beer showcases the traditional brewing culture of the Lower Rhine region.

Tasting Notes

A beautiful copper-amber colour with reddish highlights and a creamy, off-white head. The aroma offers inviting notes of toasted bread, biscuit and caramel malt, complemented by subtle herbal and earthy hops.

On the palate, rich toasted malt flavours and gentle caramel sweetness are balanced by a firm but approachable hop bitterness. Hints of roasted grain and nutty malt add complexity without making the beer heavy.

Medium-bodied, smooth and refreshing, with a clean, slightly dry finish that encourages another sip. Unlike many darker beers, Diebels Alt remains crisp and exceptionally drinkable.

Brewery Story

Brauerei Diebels was founded in 1878 by Josef Diebels in Issum, a small town in the Lower Rhine region of Germany, not far from Düsseldorf. The brewery became particularly well known for its dedication to Altbier, helping popularise this traditional German beer style throughout the country.

The name Altbier translates as "old beer", referring to the older method of top fermentation used before bottom-fermented lagers became dominant across Germany.

Although Altbier is most closely associated with Düsseldorf, Diebels developed its own distinctive interpretation of the style in nearby Issum. The brewery became one of Germany's best-known Altbier producers, helping introduce the style to drinkers far beyond its traditional Rhineland heartland.
